Beat

March 2020, SMTD Playfest

University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance

It's 2020 in middle America, where gun reform has yet to be instituted but new policy criminalizing abortion has come to reign. BEAT follows the story of two girls coming of age in a dangerous and restrictive time at the intersection of gun violence and sexual violence. Together, they must navigate the politics of friends' deaths and overcome challenges to autonomy. Meanwhile, their teacher aspires for gun reform and longs to be a mother, while a neighborhood woman must confront an unwanted pregnancy. Trauma and its politicization is explored in this story of families, sisterhoods, and police domination. It forces us to ask, what is the value of a heartbeat? And what lives do we protect under the guise of "the right to life?"

BEAT is a full-length drama workshopped and produced at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.
